STUDENTS of
the Laksamana College of Business (LCB) who are expected to be
leaving for the United Kingdom this September, attended a
pre-departure briefing at the Rizqun International Hotel,
Gadong, yesterday.
Malcolm Taylor, Head of International Recruitment Officer
from the University of Glamorgan and Duncan Low, a
representative from the British High Commission in the
sultanate, briefed the students about visas and other
important documents required prior to entering the UK, as well
as information on what to expect while living there such as
survival tactics accommodations and planning weekly expenses.
According to LCB, 20 students will be continuing their
studies in the UK under the college's twinning programme this
year, compare to only 16 in previous year.
For the September 2007 intake, 11 students will be pursuing
their studies in Kensington College of Business, which is the
London Centre for the University of Glamorgan, two to
University of Northumbria, three students to University of
Glamorgan and another two to other Universities in the UK.
A group of female students, who are currently studying
courses ranging from Information Technology (IT), Business to
Accounting, voiced their consensus that they have mixed
feelings about studying abroad but at the same time felt that
it was a good opportunity because they will graduate in two
years time from UK universities after having completed a year
of study at LCB.
One local student who wishes only to be known as Micha,
said that she has been trying to spend as much time as
possible with her family and enjoy as much local food as
possible because having been to England before she knew that
she would miss them so much, especially the ambuyat, a local
traditional dish made from sago.
Meanwhile another local student, Hjh Amalina Abdullah, 20,
who is currently studying Business Management and Tourism
stated that it was a great opportunity to be able to further
her study overseas for she has never been to the UK before.
She hoped that when she returned home she would be able to
help her mother in managing her bakery.
Three female students from the Philippines, 18-year-olds
Jia Bumatay and Carla Bumatay, and 16-year-old Pauline
Fernandez, currently studying for their diploma in Business
Studies and Business Management, stated that they "are anxious
to go to the UK and gain some new experience and at the same
time to have fun".
Another student, Peter Kyeleve from Nigeria, has just been
studying in LCB for a year, and already was lucky enough to go
to UK. He said he has no fear of continuing his studies in a
foreign country.
Chin Sheng Liang, 22, who is a student from Kota Kinabalu,
Malaysia, has just finished his Higher National Diploma in
Business Studies and said that it has been a good experience
and he hoped to further his studies to Kensington College of
Business, London, which is also a subsidiary of LCB.Laksamana
College of Business was first established in 2003 as a
professional business course provider with faculty members
hail from Australia, Canada, Malaysia and even Poland.
According to S Sivarajah, the college's administrative Manager
and a lecturer, the school offers a state of the art
technology for the students and a good library. He said the
college give both local and international students
opportunities "to start their journey to success in the
courses provided".
Students interested in joining the LCB, registration is now
open for the University Foundation Course and BA Common Year
for the September 1, 2007 intake.
