Laksamana College of Business (LCB) successful Athletics Day yesterday may act as an impetus for organising inter-college tournaments in the future.
Held for the first time ever, yesterday's one-day event at the Berakas Sports Complex was a resounding success according to its organisers who plan on organising such events among local private colleges as early as next year.
Pehin Orang Kaya Ratna Setia Dato Setia Hj Abdul Hapidz Pehin Orang Kaya Laksamana Hj Abdul Razak, the college's director was the guest of honour at the event and presented the various winners with their medals.
This year's event was a trial basically and we were all surprised with the response it got from teachers, students and parents,
said the vice-president of LCB's newly formed Sports Committee Mash Abdullah.
We hope to make it a bigger and better event next year and we want it to include other private colleges as well.
The aim of the event was to promote LCB and encourage its staff and students to take part in sports, and we even managed to make a small profit from it which was another one of our aims,
she added.
According to Mash, the idea to organise the competition was one that she and fellow vice-president Maria Rahman came up with, with the committee's president Yusuf Flynn fully supporting the initiative.
Preparation for the event took less than a month.
Among the track events that were contested were the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 4x100m relay races for both men and women, with field events such as discus throw, javelin throw, shot put and long jump also on the list.
Probably the competition's most outstanding male athlete, Ak Md Noor 'Izzuddin Pg Omar bagged two gold, two silver and a bronze medal.
The 19-year-old Diploma student won the shot put and discus throw events and finished second in the javelin and 4x100m relay race, with his sole bronze medal coming in the 4x100m mixed relay race.
I didn't expect to win all those medals, but there was no secret to it,
said Ak Md Noor 'Izzuddin. I guess I just went with the flow and I am proud of my achievement, especially considering that it is the first time that LCB has organised such an event,
he added.
